How To Crush It On Reddit Using GIFs And Videos

Only a year after launching its own video player, giving their users the ability to record and upload their own videos natively to the platform, Reddit reported users uploaded 996,000 videos in August 2018 – up 31 percent year over year.

Reddit users also watch more than 400,000 hours of native videos per day and 13 million hours per month – up 38 percent this year.

So what does that mean for marketers? A couple things…first, video must be apart of your digital marketing strategy – that’s a given – and second, Reddit native video is something to explore…

r/videotypes

Let’s keep it real, videos on Reddit aren’t your typical 25 to 30 minute theatrical releases…

According to Alex Le, VP of Product at Reddit videos are short – usually GIFs or user generated videos that last less than 30 seconds or short clips running one to two minutes.

A year in, there are three dominate video types, “soundless Gifs that can go viral across communities; videos centering on large “passion-based” communities such as gaming; and niche, evergreen videos such as how-to clips on how to keep succulents alive.”

That being said, with the platform’s tight communities and super high engagement rates it’s probably a good idea to explore Reddit native video ads

The DIY of the GIF

Since we know that most videos on Reddit are usually short – consisting of GIFs and UGC uploaded directly from a phone – let’s take a look at how we can create these sorts of video assets…

  • For GIFs, you can use Photoshop to upload pictures and create your GIF frame by frame. On mobile, download an app called GIPHY Cam.
  • Gary V type videos are super popular and use all the knick knacks like progress bars, captions and watermarks.
  • Add some flare to your selfie video rants by using Apple Clips – comes automatically downloaded on most iPhones.

Remember, these types of videos might work great on Reddit but might not work too well on Instagram, Facebook or YouTube. So make sure your video marketing strategy covers all platforms and all video types your target customer desires.
