What an Exercise Bike Tells Us About the Future of Video Marketing

I want you to stop for a second. Look around and count how many screens you see within a 20 foot radius – if you’re in the office then there’s probably a good amount…but if you’re at home it brings up a more interesting discussion.

Peloton, the in-home exercise bike – with a screen – that allows you to stream classes and connect with trainers and riders from around the world, shows us the future power of video marketing. I mean seriously, the bike has a screen.

Samsung already released a smart fridge “Family Hub” that has a 21.5 inch screen and voice assistant.  This is what is called the “Internet of Things” and IoT makes almost everything we own connected…

So what does that mean for marketers?

The Opt-ins Trade

This gives marketers more access to the right user at the right time. So in the smart fridge example, when a home chef is using the screen to watch a recipe video the advertisers know they’re in the kitchen cooking. Same thing if the washing machine has a screen and someone is doing a load…

What happens when the smart fridge gives the consumer the opt-in experience to view ads? Consumers know that their attention has value so allowing them to opt-in and view an ad to unlock the free use of an app or service is a pretty fair deal. Research shows that such opt-in video ads engage users at eight times the rate of autoplay ads.

Here’s another wild assumption of the future…what if the price of a smart fridge was cheaper because you agree to see ads?

All these scenarios seem like a win-win…

Become a video production pro…

Ok we get it…IoT, opt-in ads and smart fridges are important to marketers. But none of this is helpful unless you can produce legit videos. Video marketing is the key to all of this. The screens are there for the use of video so if you can’t create marketing videos at a high quality and scale you’re out of luck…
